Maggie Ferguson spent much of her early adulthood participating in community theatre, but always had a love for the guitar and was inspired by the music of Buffy Sainte-Marie, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Joan Baez. Eventually Maggie got married and music got put on the back burner for several years. However, she made her musical comeback in church, singing and accompanying herself on guitar in front of congregations both great and small.
Eventually, she had to branch out and went to fingerstyle guitar instructor Vince Sadovsky to learn style and versatility. Maggie emerged on the local folk scene and created “The Nameless Open Mic”. In 2001, when singer/songwriter and sound engineering guru Dennis Kingsbury came along, together they created the long running Live! From the Living Room Acoustic Showcase in Pontiac, MI. In 2004, Maggie was offered the opportunity to take over Dan Hazlett's one hour radio show "Local Folks", transforming it into the weekly, two and a half hour "The Old Front Porch Radio Show" on Oakland University Radio station WXOU FM.
Maggie has also been a long time member of Paint Creek Folklore Society, serving on the board of directors as President for two terms, and is currently serving a third term as Vice-President.
In October of 2009, FARM (Folk Alliance Region Midwest) honored Maggie by giving her the Traditions Award for Lifetime Achievement for her work in folk radio, Paint Creek Folklore Society, and for Live! From the Living Room, as well as for her achievements in performance.
Maggie is also a member of the high-energy folk band Floyd King and the Bushwackers. As FoxFire Harmony Duo, Maggie and her partner Denise Marie Stein performed at Mama's Coffeehouse, Off-The-Wall Coffeehouse, Live! From the Living Room, The White Crow Conservatory, SLUM City Coffeehouse, a host of festivals, benefits, and private parties. Tragically, Denise Marie Stein passed away after a long battle with leukemia, so Maggie finds herself a solo act again for the first time in over six years. She is anxious to prove that she can still carry on in the face of this difficult loss. |
